New York Marathon

This weeks blog news is a personal update following my return from New York. Commencing on Sunday 3rdNovember with the New York Marathon I embarked on the 4th part of my journey to complete all 6 World Marathon Major’s and I will be completing the final three of these over the space of 5 months to help raise funds for The Childrens Adventure Farm, www.caft.co.uk a wonderful local charity that does amazing work with ill and disadvantaged children. Having already completed 3 (Chicago, Berlin & Boston) of the 6 majors, New York was number 4 on the list. Sunday was the culmination of over 650 miles training and racing over the previous 16 weeks. A very early start saw me heading out to Staten Island on a coach at 6.20 AM. The race started in very cool, blustery conditions at 9.40 AM and we were clearly going to have a headwind for most of the run North through all 5 Boroughs of New York. The race starts over the Verrazano Straits Bridge which has a span of almost 2 miles and is a tough but really iconic start to the race. There are 5 bridges in total as well as numerous long uphill drags which all presented serious challenges, especially 3 really long uphill sections in the last 10 miles plus the undulations towards the finish in Central Park. I am pleased to say that the run went pretty much as well as I could have hoped for and I finished just outside the top 4,000 out of 50,304 finishers, 84th out of 1,858 in my age group (55-59) and 6th Britain in that age category. My time was 3:27:06 which I was delighted with despite seriously slowing down in the last 6 miles! So now its on to legs 5 & 6. Tokyo is next on 23rd February followed by London on 13th April. This week I will rest up and then its back to training this weekend. Donations can be made via www.justgiving.co.uk/tonycollier4CAFT
