Helping clients to plan their future strategies

More and more often we are being asked to help clients plan their future strategies and, in particular, their exit strategies. I had a great day yesterday facilitating a client’s senior management teams away day in North Wales and helping them brainstorm in key areas:-

  • Systemisation of their business so that it works without them “in it”
  • Recognising that they all had different personal goals and needed to work out how they could all work together in the business to satisfy each other’s goals whilst at the same time aligning this with their vision for the future of the Company. We spent time reviewing gaps in funding their retirement to help them recognise that this gap would only be plugged by a successful exit from the business
  • Reviewing control and reporting systems and recognising that great businesses have great systems that the management team can rely on and reaching the conclusion that more had to be done in this area
  • Considering the importance of having KPI’s in all areas of their business ranging from finance through to client satisfaction and service delivery and appreciating that, once they had agreed on which KPI’s were most important to them that they needed systems in place to ensure that they were meeting each KPI
  • We looked in some detail at the future growth plans of the business and the impact that this might have on the growth in value of the business, essential in satisfying their personal aims. Using our Counsellor tool we did some detailed trend analysis to project future profits/cash flows and the increase in the businesses value that would flow from them. We then spent some time flexing the numbers to give us a realistic outlook into the future
  • Of vital importance was a session on developing and incentivising key personnel whether that be by way of financial reward or ownership of the business and we considered the best ways to achieve these aims
This was very much a first for me but it was incredibly interesting and enjoyable and thankfully I did manage to stimulate/provoke some very interesting discussion! Hopefully my clients got great value from my input.   The culmination of the day was drinks on the terrace on a beautiful sunny afternoon followed by an excellent dinner!   If anybody is interested in talking about strategic planning for their businesses then I am very happy to have a chat through to establish their needs. Equally, if anyone wants to buy me dinner I am always available! Tony Collier, Managing Director
